The transfer of a world-first clean coal demonstration project (ZeroGen) to the Queensland Government and the ongoing role of Stanwell as the main services provider for the project has secured Queensland’s role as a leader in international efforts to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

Stanwell Chief Executive Officer Mr Kim Wood said the transfer of the ZeroGen demonstration project to the Department of Premier and Cabinet will ensure the project maintains the significant momentum it has achieved to date.

"This is exciting news for Stanwell and provides further certainty for the ZeroGen project,” Mr Wood said.

"ZeroGen is first-of-a-kind clean coal power demonstration project involving both coal-based gasification and carbon capture and storage.

"The large-scale deployment of the technologies demonstrated by ZeroGen could achieve ‘deep cuts’ of up to 80% in CO2 emissions relative to conventional coal-fired power stations.

"A project of this nature and technological advancement requires support from all levels of government and industry.

"As such, the Queensland Government is the best vehicle to facilitate this and secure the necessary funding and regulatory approvals, particularly as the project has national and international significance.

"As the initial developer and main provider of services to the ZeroGen project, Stanwell is proud to be a part of this world leading project.

"While there remains significant work to be done, if the feasibility study proves successful, the proposed ZeroGen project could be the first in the world to integrate coal-based gasification, and carbon capture and storage to produce low-emission base load electricity. Subject to funding and regulatory approvals, the plant could be operating by 2011.

"The transfer of the project to the Department of Premier and Cabinet is a clear demonstration of the commitment of the Queensland Government to the research and development of clean coal technologies.

"Under the stewardship of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, the Stanwell team is committed to delivering the feasibilities studies which will underpin the development of this world-first clean coal power station project.

"This includes the completion of the Environmental Impact Statement to ensure relevant stakeholders are consulted and empowered to participate in the process."
