Dr Kelly Thambimuthu has more than 25 years of experience in the field of low-emission technology and is highly respected by governments and research organisations worldwide. His expertise lies in clean coal technologies, low-emission energy and climate change issues.
Dr Thambimuthu is presently the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Low Emission Technology (cLET). As CEO, Dr Thambimuthu oversees projects across a number of low-emission electricity areas including gas processing, cleaning and separation; gasification; and the social and economic integration of new energy technologies.
Dr Thambimuthu is also the Chairman of the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Greenhouse Gas R&D Program, a collaborative initiative working on technologies to achieve deep reductions in greenhouse emissions with a membership of 18 countries, the European Union, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and about 20 other commercial organisations and research entities.
Before joining cLET in 2004, Dr Thambimuthu worked with CANMET Energy Technology Centre in Ottawa, Canada. While there, Dr Thambimuthu worked with industry, universities and government on energy solutions for the commercial and industrial sectors. Between 2003 and 2005, he was also a coordinating lead author and editorial panel member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Assessment Report on CO2 Capture and Storage. His work with the IPCC is among the contributions that led to the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize to the IPCC and Albert Arthur Gore.
Dr Thambimuthu holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, a Masters of Chemical Engineering and a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering. He received his degrees from the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom), McGill University (Canada) and the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). Dr Thambimuthu has authored more than 130 publications and is a recipient of the 2006 International Energy Agency Coal Industry Advisory Board's award for promoting the sustainable development of coal.
Dr. Thambimuthu is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and a member of the Energy Institute, UK.
